BANANAS YEARBOOK 1984 – ‘Isn’t It Time That…’
Bananas Yearbook 1984 – ‘Isn’t It Time That…’
So, I never got those Mad, Cracked, or Crazy magazine gigs. But, in 1984 when I got a call to contribute art for Scholastic Press that was almost as good!
Scholastic magazines had been a fixture in publications for kids since well before I was in elementary school. (1920 to be exact.) ‘Bananas‘ was their take on a humor magazine for teens. It was kind of like ‘Mad Lite‘, and a few of the contributors, like artist, Sam Viviano became major Mad magazine contributors. The editor was R.L Stine (aka ‘Jovial Bob Stein), and man… look up his wikipedia page to see what he’s done since Bananas! (Hint: It gives me Goosebumps…just thinking about it…)
Bananas magazine was a fun look at popular culture during the 70’s & 80’s. This particular piece that appeared in the ‘Bananas 1984 yearbook’ was written by Suzanne Lord, but they let me add my own incidental gags inside the panels, so I had a lot of fun with it. Some gags referencing ‘Matt Houston‘, ‘Mr. Smith‘, and ‘Real People‘ might go over some peoples heads today. But, if you love the 80’s this will give you a good idea of what was going on at the time.
Bananas seems to still have a following of people who remember it fondly. I’ve seen some issues have become vintage collectables. Here’s one site I found paying tribute to it. http://www.squidoo.com/Scholastics_Bananas_Magazine
So, if any Bananas fans stumble onto my site, and want to know what issue this is from. The cover features ‘Winners & Losers of 1984′ which included, Mr. T, ‘The Hoff’, and (of course...) The legendary M.J!
Definitely a collectors item!
